Daily Message of Recovery

A LIST OF BLESSINGS

One exercise that I practice is to try for a full inventory of my blessings...

— AS BILL SEES IT, p. 37

What did I have to be grateful for? I shut myself up and started listing the blessings for which I was in no way responsible, beginning with having been born of sound mind and body. I went through seventy-four years of living right up to the present moment. The list ran to two pages, and took two hours to compile; I included health, family, money, A.A. – the whole gamut.

Every day in my prayers, I ask God to help me remember my list, and to be grateful for it throughout the day. When I remember my gratitude list, it's very hard to conclude that God is picking on me.

Update on Client Advisory Groups and Events
No updates around the groups are available in the note taken at the forum.
.
Questions for Sarah Blakley around active inclusion (housing)

Feedback from talking to the members who attended was that a lot of the conversation was around the ‘blue sky’ ideal scenarios that are simply not possible in the current economic climate e.g. the night shelter.

The questions that have been sent to Sarah based on the notes are:

Is there a criteria around who can get housed and where they would sit on any priority list according to their circumstances and can it be shared with the forum?

Is there a type of flow chart that shows a person’s journey from homeless to housed (can it be shared with the forum?)

When people are released from prison they can seem to slip through the net. I know this is not directly your role but again is there a flow chart or expected route for these people to receive support and housing?

BBQ
Date agreed for 31/5/15 Leazes Park from 12pm
All the purchasing of food and by whom was decided at the last forum. All items on the agreed list will be paid for by the forum and so people will be reimbursed.

If extra calls are to be made to see if we can get donations then these need to be done and all in place for the next forum on 28/5/15. Current estimate are 50 people will be attending.

Sponsored Events
Discussion around the sponsored walk. It was agreed at the 30/4/15 forum that a route would be agreed between: Newburn to Wylam or St Mary’s to Tynemouth to be decided at this forum. It wasn’t so this will be carried forward to the forum on 28/5/15.

Sponsor sheets have been designed by Chris (big thanks to Chris for more great work) and were handed out to members.

Peer Mentoring Course
Course starts in June and Terry gave out paperwork to members. Applications needed to be handed in by 18/5/15 to turning point.

RICH Program
Chris talked about the RICH program and gave out information and a questionnaire to members who wanted to get involved.

Oops!

“Insanity is repeating the same mistakes and expecting different results.”

Basic Text, p. 23

Mistakes!  We all know how it feels to make them.  Many of us feel that our entire lives have been a mistake.  We often regard our mistakes with shame or guilt—at the very least, with frustration and impatience.  We tend to see mistakes as evidence that we are still sick, crazy, stupid, or too damaged to recover.

In truth, mistakes are a very vital and important part of being human.  For particularly stubborn people (such as addicts), mistakes are often our best teachers.  There is no shame in making mistakes.  In fact, making new mistakes often shows our willingness to take risks and grow.

It’s helpful, though, if we learn from our mistakes; repeating the same ones may be a sign that we’re stuck.  And expecting different results from the same old mistakes—well, that’s what we call “insanity.”  It just doesn’t work.

Just for today:  Mistakes aren’t tragedies.  But please, Higher Power, help me learn from them!

Teachable

Page 134

"We have learned that it is okay to not know all the answers, for then we are teachable and can learn to live our new life successfully."

Basic Text, p. 96

In a way, addiction is a great teacher. And if addiction teaches us nothing else, it will teach us humility. We hear it said that it took our very best thinking to get to NA. Now that we're here, we're here to learn.

The NA Fellowship is a wonderful learning environment for the recovering addict. We aren't made to feel stupid at meetings. Instead, we find others who've been exactly where we've been and who've found a way out. All we have to do is admit that we don't have all the answers, then listen as others share what's worked for them.

As recovering addicts and as human beings, we have much to learn. Other addicts-and other humans-have much to teach us about what works and what doesn't. As long as we remain teachable, we can take advantage of the experience of others.

Just for Today: I will admit that I don't have all the answers. I will look and listen to the experience of others for the answers I need.

Daily Message of Recovery

RESPECT FOR OTHERS
Such parts of our story we tell to someone who will understand, yet be unaffected. The rule is we must be hard on ourself, but always considerate of others.
— ALCOHOLICS ANONYMOUS, p. 74
Respect for others is the lesson that I take out of this passage. I must go to any lengths to free myself if I wish to find that peace of mind that I have sought for so long. However, none of this must be done at another's expense. Selfishness has no place in the A.A. way of life.
When I take the Fifth Step it's wiser to choose a person with whom I share common aims because if that person does not understand me, my spiritual progress may be delayed and I could be in danger of a relapse. So I ask for divine guidance before choosing the man or woman whom I take into my confidence.

Update on Client Advisory Groups and Events

Trading Places – Update from Dave and explanation of TP to new members. A great way to volunteer and a very rewarding experience.

Monday Plummer Court – New group Monday 11.00-1.00 in the day centre with forum members sharing their experience with people on their first day of alcohol or drug detox. Well received by clients in Plummer. Members of the forum will be there on Bank Holiday Monday.

Wednesday Plummer Court – Group continues on a Wednesday and is well established now and well attended by forum members. Chris gave an update on the last Plummer group and some good relationships being built with 1 client attending the afternoon and evening NA meeting.

Recovery Clinic – Generally all going well. Important for the forum to maintain a presence there. No update was available on the Tuesday group.

Question was raised as to whether NUCF volunteers have to be abstinent to volunteer? The NUCF supports recovery in all formats and members do not have to be in abstinence based recovery to attend the forum or the client advisory volunteer groups. However, volunteers must be stable in their recovery to ensure a positive image of the forum and of recovery is shown whenever we are representing the NUCF.

UKRW15 – Andy gave an explanation of what the UKRW15 is all about. More details available at http://www.ukrecoverywalk.org/durham-walk-2015/

Planning meetings are the last Friday of every month in Durham. The forum is involved in the planning and are members of the festival and events team which is looking after the stage events at the walk. Anyone who would like to go contact Andy 07812672803 or andy.hackett@Newcastle.gov.uk

There is a planned sub-committee meeting on the 14/05/2015 so the same applies let Andy know of you want to go along. Lunch is provided at the monthly meetings and transport will be provided too.

Sponsored Events and Summer Stuff!
It was agreed at the previous forum that we would do some sponsored events and summer activities in the next few months.

Ideas: Camping, BBQ, Park visit, Canoeing, Kielder forest via the Calvert Trust (Martin will investigate this and communicate back the forum)

BBQ in the park to be the first summer event:
Leases Park 31/05/15
Friends and families including children are welcome
Karen to share with Recovery Centre and invite volunteers from there.
Richie – to source sports equipment
Christine and Chris – to source the meat
Andrea and Gillian – items for salad
Terry and Chris P – BBQ’s, plates, cups etc.
Gary to help with food preparation

NUCF Blog
Some questions about accessing the minutes and the blog. Chris gave the blog address (http://nucf-group.blogspot.co.uk/) to members and it will be sent out by text when the minutes are sent.

Sponsored Events
The charities the forum supports be decided on a rota basis and the first sponsored event will be a walk.

2 routes were suggested: Newburn to Wylam or St Mary’s to Tynemouth to be decided at the next forum.

Chris will design the sponsor sheets
Andy to print them all to be handed out at the next forum.

Questions for the Housing Team
The format for Sarah Blakey’s next visit to the forum on 28th will be different. There will be specific questions/feedback for Sarah gathered by the forum and passed on to Sarah before the 28th so she (or her colleagues) can source the answers and give specifics back to the forum.
The questions will be part of the agenda for the NUCF on the 14/05/2015

AOB - None
Next NUCF 14/05/2015 at Brunswick Church – to be confirmed.

Daily Message of Recovery

Daily Message of Recovery

Tell yourself: Just for today my thoughts will be on my recovery, living and enjoying life without the use of drugs.

Just for today I will have faith in someone in NA who believes in me and wants to help me in my recovery.

Just for today I will have a program. I will try to follow it to the best of my ability.

Just for today, through NA, I will try to get a better perspective on my life.

Just for today I will be unafraid, my thoughts will be on my new associations, people who are not using and who have found a new way of life.

So long as I follow that way, I have nothing to fear.
