Plummer Court Monday – Group is getting busier and more NUCF volunteers are needed

Plummer Court Wednesday – Group continues to go from strength to strength but as with the Monday group more volunteers especially women are needed.

Recovery Clinic – Terry feedback that the Thursday group is. Good for the NUCF to still have a presence there to give support and sign post people.

UKRW2015
Names of members who would like to attend the walk were taken and it was confirmed that there would be a £5 returnable deposit for the coach that will pick up at Gateshead and Newcastle. Anybody else who would like to attend please let Andy know.

All members present agreed to be part of the rota for the NUCF stall at the walk which will involve talking to people passing handing out literature and facilitating the events we are having on the stall (beer goggles events and smoothie bike).
Briefly mentioned that we will have a banner for the walk that will have a printed design. Richie will put together a few ideas.

Guest Speaker
Richard Anderson Veterans Support. Richard talked about his new role funded by Combat Stress. Designed to help veterans access services and if necessary treatment. This doesn’t just cover substance misuse but all reintegration issues.

People need to be ‘stable’ to enter treatment.
There are 1000 veteran charities in the UK Richard and his team have had 70 referrals over the past 7 to 8 months. The referrals cover homelessness and mental health issues and come from area such as GP’s and existing treatment providers.

There was a discussion around aftercare and the belief that this should be on going.

Guest Speaker
Lindsey Mallory Shelter. Lindsey is based in Manchester and wanted to get the NUCF’s views on the idea of Shelter setting up a new service in Newcastle. The service is Big Lottery funded and aimed at getting people out of crisis.
Essential questions were what help do people need? How and where should the service operate? What peer led involvement should there be?

Lindsay gave a summary of Shelter’s work and around legal assistance, renting advice, private land lords, training and linking in with advocacy services.
Suggestions were that the service should be close to or in job centres, food banks, treatment centres and located around the city in a ‘satellite’ model covering areas in the East and West End.

Also that the service should be open weekends and potentially 24/7. Face to face advice was preferred rather than a 24/7 phone line giving a 1 stop shop service. Ideally joint working with other providers maybe jointly funded and run.

This would help people before they get into crisis.
How to communicate this: leaflet drops, knocking on doors, target certain areas or even certain streets. Link into with non-crisis services such as colleges and Universities.

AOB
Sponsored walk was planned for this weekend some members are going ahead with walk.
